Is It Me, or Is the Job Market Just…Weird Right Now?

Every week I talk to job seekers, from recent grads to seasoned professionals, including international students, who are scratching their heads. ‘I’m applying, but I’m not hearing back.’ ‘There are job postings everywhere, but nothing seems to move forward.’ ‘I get interviews, but no offers.’ Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

The Current State of the Job Market: A Weird Mix

According to the May 2025 Employment Situation report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. unemployment rate has held steady at 4.2%, however, the job market still feels confusing and frustrating to many job seekers.

It’s no wonder job seekers feel stuck. Even with headlines about hiring surges, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Applicants submit resumes, prepare for interviews, and wait, only to be met with silence or stalled decisions. The market looks active, but the process feels disconnected. Now, more than ever, it’s essential to have a smart, strategic approach.

Let’s Talk About Ghosting: What It Is and What to Do About It

If you’ve applied for a job, maybe even interviewed, and then never heard back… you’ve been ghosted.

Ghosting in the job search means a company or hiring manager simply stops communicating with no updates, no closure, and often no explanation. Unfortunately, it’s becoming increasingly common.

According to a June 2025 Newsweek report, more employers are ghosting job seekers, even after interviews, due to overwhelmed HR departments, internal restructuring, hiring freezes, and decision paralysis. In some cases, companies aren’t even sure if the role will be filled, so communication stops entirely.

Why It’s Happening:

  • Too many applicants, too little time: Hiring teams are flooded and stretched thin.
  • Hiring plans are uncertain: Roles get paused or canceled mid-process.
  • Lack of process accountability: Not all companies have strong systems for closing the loop.
  • Fear of difficult conversations: It’s easier to say nothing than to deliver rejection.

What You Can Do:

  • Follow up once or twice and then move on. If you don’t hear back after a polite follow-up email, it’s okay to redirect your energy elsewhere.
  • Keep applying strategically. Don’t wait around for one role. Maintain momentum with other applications.
  • Build real relationships. Ghosting happens less often in opportunities that come through networking or referrals.
  • Don’t take it personally. Ghosting says more about the employer’s process than your qualifications.
  • Document your experiences. Keep a log of follow-ups and responses; this will help you refine your strategy.

Who’s Struggling the Most

While the job market may appear stable on paper, certain groups of job seekers are facing unique and persistent challenges, particularly entry-level candidates, career switchers, and those deemed “overqualified.”

Entry-level job seekers, especially recent graduates, are often caught in a paradox: employers want candidates with experience, but offer limited opportunities to gain it. Many postings labeled “entry-level” still ask for two or more years of industry experience, leaving new grads feeling stuck before they even start.

Career switchers face skepticism, too. Despite bringing a wealth of transferable skills, they’re often overlooked in favor of candidates with direct experience. Hiring managers may struggle to connect the dots between past roles and new industry demands, leading to stalled momentum or repetitive rejections.

And on the flip side, overqualified applicants those with extensive experience, can be passed over for fear they’ll be bored, too expensive, or likely to leave quickly. In reality, many are just seeking stability, meaningful work, or a new chapter that aligns with their values.

What to Do When You Feel Stuck

Step 1: Take a Break (Strategically)

The last time I felt stuck, my action-oriented brain kicked into overdrive. I thought, “Just do more. Push harder. Prove yourself.” So I did. I stayed up late. I hustled through weekends. I created, refined, built, and completed all of the tasks I thought would move me through being stuck. And sure enough. I had a full page of accomplishments to show for it. Look at me go!

But when I paused long enough to really listen, to friends, to family, to myself, I heard something else. You’re exhausted. One trusted friend gently said I seemed like a “shell” of myself. Then another echoed it. And another. That stopped me in my tracks. Look at me… really look at me.

On the recommendation of a wise woman, I gave myself a two-week break. Not to give up, but to realign. To rest, reflect, and return with clarity. I stepped out of the hustle. I reclaimed my weeknights and weekends. I embraced SLOW living.

The job market isn’t a sprint, it’s a long game. And the most sustainable success comes from people who know when to pause, recharge, and protect their energy.

If you’re feeling stuck, maybe you don’t need to do more. Maybe you need space to be. Give yourself permission to pause. Your goals will still be there when you’re ready, and you’ll be stronger when you come back to them.

2. Reconnect with your “why.”

If the current job search is making you feel out of sync, you’re not alone. Sometimes it’s not just about updating your resume or networking harder, it’s about realigning your life, energy, and values. In moments like these, I come back to the idea of coherence: the inner harmony between what you do, how you feel, and what truly matters.

Read my post on Coherence for a deeper reflection on how to restore balance and move forward with clarity.

3. Work with a Coach (Yes, It’s Okay to Ask for Help)

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your job search or your sanity is to bring in a partner who can walk alongside you. A career coach can help you clarify your goals, refine your materials, troubleshoot what’s not working, and most importantly, remind you that you’re not doing this alone.

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next step, this might be the perfect time to explore coaching. I’d be honored to help you realign your search, build momentum, and design a path that feels right for you.

Final Thoughts: You’re Not Alone and You’re Not Doing It Wrong

If the job search has left you feeling frustrated, ghosted, or just plain tired, you’re not imagining things. This market is weird right now. The traditional rules don’t always apply, and even the most qualified candidates are facing long silences and unexpected setbacks.

But here’s the truth: you are not the problem. You don’t need to hustle harder or “fix” yourself. What you need is space, strategy, and support.

So take a breath. Take a break. Realign.

When you’re ready, come back to your search with renewed clarity and purpose. Use the 10 steps as your guide. Revisit your “why.” Focus on what you can control, and release what you can’t.

And remember, you don’t have to do it all alone. Whether you’re ready for a coach, need to rest, or just want to reconnect with what matters most, you are already doing something powerful: you’re showing up with intention.

You’ve got this. And I’m here to help whenever you’re ready.
