Attending career events can be a game-changer for job seekers. Career events provide a unique chance to network with industry professionals, gain valuable insights into open roles, and make lasting impressions on potential employers.

Career Fairs

These are large-scale events where multiple employers set up booths to meet with job seekers. Career fairs can be general, targeting a wide range of industries, or specialized, focusing on specific sectors like technology, healthcare, or finance.

Preparing for Career Fairs

Create Your Elevator Pitch: An elevator pitch is a concise and compelling summary to share with new connections, typically delivered in the time it takes to ride an elevator (around 30-60 seconds).

Print Hard Copies of Your Updated Resume: Fundamentally resumes have changed very little over the past several decades as the goal of showcasing skills and experiences in an easily readable format remains the same. There are, however, new tools being used to review and select resumes which makes the process of writing a resume much more advanced.

Networking Events

These events are designed to help professionals connect with each other. They can range from formal networking sessions with structured activities to informal meet-and-greet events where attendees can mingle and exchange contact information.

Company Information Sessions

Company Information Sessions are events hosted by employers to provide detailed information about their organization to potential job candidates. These sessions are designed to give attendees insights into the company’s culture, values, job openings, and application processes.

Typically, these sessions might include a company overview with insights into the organization’s products, services, and market position. Presenters could discuss the work environment, team dynamics, and organizational values along with descriptions of available positions, career paths, and growth opportunities within the company.

Often, an info session will include a step-by-step guide on how to apply for jobs plus tips on resume writing, interview preparation, and what the company looks for in candidates. This gives attendees a leg up on the process.

This is a great place to ask questions and get firsthand answers from employees and recruiters while getting in front of company representatives, recruiters, and other job seekers.

You can find information sessions by checking the careers or events section of the company’s official website, following companies on social media or checking websites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Glassdoor that often list upcoming information sessions.

Professional Workshops, Seminars, and Conferences

I attribute much of my career success and satisfaction to the relationships and knowledge I have gained by attending literally hundreds of workshops at local, regional, and national conferences. Learning common and best practices from others in your field is valuable beyond measure.

As you pursue career opportunities making time to attend workshops and conferences not only allows you to brush up on trends, it also is a great way to connect with other professionals.

Hackathons

Particularly popular in tech fields, these events allow participants to showcase their skills through challenges and competitions. These events are designed to foster creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. Participants, often including developers, designers, project managers, and other tech enthusiasts, work together to build prototypes or solutions to specific challenges.

Hackathons typically last between one to three days. They often have a theme or specific challenge that participants need to address. This could range from creating a new app, solving a social issue with technology, to innovating within a particular industry like healthcare or finance.

Participants usually form teams to collaborate on projects. Teams can be pre-formed or created on the spot with individuals meeting for the first time at the event. A mix of participants with different skills, including developers, designers, business strategists, and marketers, ensures a well-rounded approach to problem-solving.

Many hackathons provide access to mentors who offer guidance and feedback. Workshops on relevant technologies and skills may also be offered.

Though hackathons promote collaboration, they are often competitive, with prizes awarded to the best projects as judged by a panel of experts. At the end of the event, teams present their projects to judges and other participants. This demo session is critical for showcasing the work done and highlighting the project’s potential impact.

Participating in a Hackathon will help you to develop new skills and meet and connect with other like-minded individuals, industry professionals, potential employers, and mentors. Projects created during hackathons can be added to personal portfolios, providing tangible proof of skills and creativity.

Many companies sponsor or participate in hackathons to scout for talent. Impressive performance can lead to job offers, internships, or other career opportunities. Winning teams often receive prizes, which can range from cash awards to tech gadgets, as well as recognition that can boost their professional credibility.

Job Simulations

A job simulation, like the ones offered by Forage, is an interactive and immersive online experience designed to give participants a realistic preview of tasks and responsibilities associated with a particular job or career field. These simulations allow individuals to “try out” a job by completing a series of tasks that mirror the actual work they would do if employed in that role.

Many organizations host free online fairs and recruiting events where you can connect with hiring professionals, learn about job openings, and network with industry experts.

You will be amazed at the results.

To make the most of these events, start by compiling a list of employers that interest you and align with your career goals. Then, search for any virtual information sessions or fairs they might be hosting or attending.
