Five Steps to Discovering Your Career Path Using the Alignment Blueprint

Are you feeling uncertain about your next career step? You’re not alone. One of the biggest challenges in career planning is gaining clarity about what you truly want and where you fit. That’s where the Alignment Blueprint Activity comes in.

This powerful exercise helps you establish a clear and intentional connection between what you enjoy (interests), what matters most to you (values), and what you’re good at (skills). When you find the intersection of these three areas, you’ll uncover the “sweet spot” for meaningful and fulfilling career opportunities.

Why Start Here?

Defining your career path is the foundation for a successful job search and long-term career satisfaction. When you clearly understand your unique combination of interests, values, and skills, you can:

  • Make confident, intentional decisions
  • Focus your efforts on opportunities that align with your goals
  • Communicate your strengths effectively to employers

Without this clarity, it’s easy to feel directionless or overwhelmed by choices. The Alignment Blueprint gives you the focus and direction needed to move forward with purpose.

The Blueprint: Interests, Values, and Skills

Step 1: Reflect on Your Interests

Your interests reveal what energizes and excites you. Ask yourself:

  • What hobbies or activities make you lose track of time?
  • What topics do you enjoy learning, reading, or talking about?
  • If you could spend your day doing anything, what would it be?
  • What types of tasks or projects excite you?

Write down a list of the activities and topics that naturally draw your attention.

Step 2: Identify Your Skills

Your skills highlight what you excel at. Think about:

  • What tasks or activities do others often ask for your help with?
  • What are your strongest professional or personal abilities?
  • What skills have you developed through education, work, or life experience?
  • When do you experience “flow,” the state of being fully immersed and energized by an activity?

Jot down all the abilities and strengths that set you apart.

Step 3: Clarify Your Values

Your values represent what’s most important to you in life and work. Consider:\n

  • What principles guide your decisions and actions?
  • When do you feel most fulfilled or proud of yourself?
  • What qualities do you admire in others, and how do they reflect your own values?
  • Think about a time when you felt conflicted—what values were at stake?

Capture the values that resonate most deeply with you.

Step 4: Populate Your Venn Diagram

Using a simple Venn diagram, organize your thoughts into three circles: Interests, Skills, and Values. Identify keywords that overlap between two categories and highlight those that appear in all three circles.

This intersection is your Alignment Blueprint—the foundation for identifying roles, activities, or environments that align with your strengths, passions, and priorities.

Step 5: Discovery and Experimentation

Once you’ve created your Alignment Blueprint, it’s time to explore:

  • What roles or industries align with your blueprint?
  • Are there areas in your life or work that don’t fit this overlap?

Set small goals to explore alignment further, like networking, volunteering, or taking a class.

Example:

  • Interest: Teaching and helping others grow.
  • Value: Empowerment and creativity.
  • Skill: Public speaking and facilitating workshops.
  • Overlap: Designing and leading workshops on personal development.

Client Success Story: Finding Purpose Through Alignment

Meet Sarah, a mid-career professional who felt stuck. Despite years of hard work in a corporate role, she felt unfulfilled and disconnected from her daily tasks. Sarah came to me seeking clarity about her next steps. In addition to other coaching work, we used the Alignment Blueprint to uncover her sweet spot.

Sarah’s Alignment Blueprint

Interests: Sarah discovered her passion for teaching and helping others grow. She loved the idea of guiding people to reach their potential and enjoyed learning about personal development topics in her free time.

Values: Empowerment and creativity were at the heart of Sarah’s decision-making. She wanted her work to inspire others and allow her to think outside the box, designing solutions and activities that made a real impact.

Skills: Sarah was known for her ability to captivate an audience. Her strong public speaking skills and knack for facilitating engaging workshops had been honed through years of professional presentations.

Transitioning Within Her Organization

Rather than seeking opportunities outside her company, Sarah started by having an open and honest conversation with her manager about her career aspirations. She expressed her desire to move into a role where she could focus on training and development, leveraging her passion for teaching and her skills in facilitation.

Together, they explored potential roles within the organization, including:

  • Training Specialist
  • Learning and Development Coordinator
  • Corporate Trainer
  • Organizational Development Specialist
  • Employee Engagement Consultant
  • Talent Development Manager

Sarah’s manager recognized her potential and suggested a stretch project: designing and leading an internal professional development workshop for her team. This project gave Sarah a chance to demonstrate her abilities while building confidence in her new direction.

The Overlap: Designing Her Path

Through these discussions and experiences, Sarah realized her sweet spot was in designing and leading workshops on personal development. This aligned perfectly with her passion for teaching, her value of empowering others, and her talent for facilitation.

Discovery and Experimentation

To put this clarity into action, Sarah set small, manageable goals:

  • Network: She reached out to professionals at her current organization and those within her network who were already creating and leading personal development workshops to learn more about their paths. She was able to better understand skills she already possessed that would be useful in these new roles and also identified gaps in her knowledge.
  • Upskill: Through her research, Sarah learned that attending a course on curriculum design could further strengthen her ability to structure impactful sessions. Her employer was supportive and allowed her to take this course as part of her professional development.
  • Experiment: Sarah’s manager encouraged her to collaborate with the company’s existing training team to gain experience and test the waters. Sarah began assisting the training team by helping design and plan professional development workshops, co-facilitating sessions on leadership, communication, and team building and sharing her expertise in public speaking to make sessions more engaging and impactful. This collaboration allowed Sarah to showcase her skills while learning from seasoned professionals.

The Outcome

Six months later, Sarah successfully transitioned into a new role as a Learning and Development Specialist within her company’s training department. In this role, she:

  • Designs and delivers workshops that help individuals and teams grow.
  • Creates innovative training programs tailored to the organization’s needs.
  • Facilitates sessions that inspire employees to develop new skills and achieve their potential.

Sarah shared that she now feels aligned with her purpose and energized by her work every day. By staying within her organization, she also maintained valuable relationships, leveraged her institutional knowledge, and seamlessly transitioned into her new role.

Takeaway

Sarah’s story highlights the value of using the Alignment Blueprint to identify a fulfilling career path. By reflecting on her interests, values, and skills, and exploring opportunities within her current company, Sarah was able to design a role that felt both meaningful and achievable.
